Dear All,

Apologies for cross-posting, but we like to reach all those people that other e-mail groups don't.

North Yorkshire County Council Environmental Services Directorate

Archaeological opportunities don't come any better *.

With over 19,000 entries in the County SMR, 880 scheduled areas, some 35 historic parks and gardens and 5 battlefields, North Yorkshire is an ideal place to practice archaeology. The Heritage Section of the Countryside Services Unit works to conserve and enhance this unique historic environment by monitoring over 11,000 planning applications and thousands of other schemes every year. We are now seeking to recruit an archaeological assistant to join our team of dedicated specialists.

Archaeology Assistant (Development Control) Ref E3/85 (G207)

Career Graded Scale 5/6 (£16,944 to £20,469) pay award pending

You will be responsible for supporting the development control work of the Archaeology team. Your work will include processing of application details, digital entry and checking of planning information, and making contact with developers and planning officers to expedite casework. In addition, you will be required to prepare statistical summaries of planning casework, provide development control advice in consultation with the Archaeologist, and assist with other day-to-day work of the Archaeology team.

To succeed, you must be a professional archaeologist with experience of practical archaeology within a Local Authority or Government environment. A good working knowledge of current legislation and procedures, and experience of working with computerised SMRs, databases or GIS applications is essential. An enthusiastic approach and an ability to deal with a heavy workload in a disciplined manner are also essential requirements.

In return we offer an attractive salary package including a car user allowance, relocation expenses, and flexible working hours. As well as the opportunity to develop your skills within an innovative and forward thinking authority, North Yorkshire is also a superb location to live and work.

For an informal discussion, contact Neil Campling (Tel 01609-532330) or Gail Falkingham
(Tel: 01609-532839)

Interviews will be held on 14 May 2004.

Further details and application forms can be obtained from the Recruitment Bureau, North Yorkshire County Council Tel (01609) 778404 (24 hour answerphone) or e-mail [log in to unmask]
to be returned by close of offices, Friday, 30 April 2004.
