Like others I've got a bit bored with this discussion, since although I admire the efforts of the reformers to get English to revert to French clarity ('cinéphile' and 'cinéaste' having quite distinct meanings), 'cineaste' has obviously come to have an English usage unknown to the French. To Mike Presti who dated the English to 1926 and asked what the Petit Robert says, I can report that it gives 1922 as the first usage, and blames the prefix 'ciné' on the Italians. (The definition is just 'personne qui exerce une activité créatrice et technique ayant rapport au cinéma').
