Maybe it is simply the rhythmic rhapsody of the rails, or just the thrill of traveling per se, but trains have always struck me as sites to enact the forbidden. Their sheer power is often depicted as associated with the protagonists' destructive force, in both Human Desire (Lang, 1954?) and the Renoir original starring Jean Gabin.
