M (Lang) interestingly structures the space of the city (something
similar happens in Open City)
Metropolis has interesting spaces discontinuous with its futuristic
cityscape, such as the Gothic remnant and the catacombs
Sunrise (Murnau) gives a nice perspective by placing country people in
city space
Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (Ruttman), a nice companion piece to A
Man With a Movie Camera
Ernie Gehr's Eureka, an amazing film created by step-printing a film
taken from the front of a streetcar as it moves through pre-earthquake
San Francisco, akin to scenes in the two above
Brakhage's Pittsburgh Trilogy, especially Polis, made as the filmmaker
travelled with police
Larry Cohen's God Told Me Too; I suspect it would be worth looking at
his blaxploitation films and blaxploitation in general for this
Dassin's Naked City and Night in the City
Lots of noir, especially Kiss Me Deadly (Aldrich) and Out of the Past
(Tourneur)
(Nicholas Christopher has an interesting chapter in his film noir study
Somewhere in the Night where his discusses these films in an analysis of
the city as labyrinth in film noir)
Val Lewton's 40s horror films, including those directed by Tourneur,
often feature long terrifying walks through the city
