hi,
on the punk cinema thing;
u should check out the works of this two:
RICHARD KERN
SOGO ISHII (mainly his early works; Burst City, Angel Dust, he also did the
farewell concert recording- "auteur" video of the 80´s japanise punk band
The Stalin, i think its called The Stalin - Last Concert. i have 2 out or 3
of those and it lives up to its tag, other Ishii; later Ishii, although not
entirely "punk", its holds some kinda raw - fucked up attitude that could be
permissive to tag along the punk thing.
now, entirely speaking from a personnal point of view, taking on account my
age (28), being, or having started as a little punk kid in some sudakan
amerikan city lost somewhere, i can tell from my guts, (no scholar
dissertation here) that although i see the incongruence of stating that
Requiem...is punk cinema, i also can relate to u´r student´s opinion. i
dunno, but maybe something to do with the Fuck U attitude those kids have in
regard to their situation their needs and wishes in the movie
Theres a movi called Suburbia, by a lady whose name i dont remember now,
from the late 80´s (maybe; early nineties, not shure) but although not punk
cinema in itself its a portrait of the punk scene from some US suburban
community back in the day, its a cool pic (what i remember) and maybe could
give u something to brew on....there´s lots of about punk-bio-punk films
around, from the Sid & Nancy thing, to the Great Rock & Roll Swindle . the
Sex Pistols thing, the X bio-pic (X being one the greatest underrated 80´s
punk band from US; LA)
i detect some punk aesthetics and thematics/attitudes in Scary Larry´s
joints and in some Harmony Korine....from Larry Clark; Kids and Ken Park, to
a less degree Bully, (well not actually, just that i didnt vibe with that
one so much, so its a personal choice), Korine´s Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy
are full of punks...(not the mohawks punks though)
anyway, hope this helps u.
as i said this i a very personnal recollection .
LM
