After a three year gap I'm looking to return to University for
post-graduate research in film. What I've noticed is that a lot of
universities are 'particularly welcoming' students planning to engage
with new media and technologies (this also seems true of film dept job
posts).
Maybe it's because I come from a Theatre BA, with only a small number
of film courses, or maybe because i have been out of the system for a
few years, but for whatever reason I seem to have missed out on this
area of study. I'm afraid I'm going to show my ignorance in a terrible
way, but my question is what exactly are they referring to here with
'new media and technology'- cheaper, faster production techniques? the
internet? advent of DVD?...and for the wider debate what makes 'new
media and technology' such a hot topic, what is its significance?
Any input, general theorizing, opinions much appreciated.
Miriam
