Watch out Sarah, Canada might be overrun by disenchanted Australians too.
Robert, I appreciated your article on Jonathan Rosenbaum and am now
appreciating reading Movie Mutations. Some very good letters and esssays.
One of Rosenbaum's points in Movie Wars is that audiences or the people want
good cinema but the market doesn't give it to them. I would like to think
this was true, and I would like to think this about people and governments.
But after the Australian election, which re-elected the Bush's dismal croney
John Howard, and after which came an orgy or right triumphalism, I must
admit I have fallen into the gloomy state of complaining about the
electorate and its mean spirit.
I guess this all falls into the old problematic of alienation. What are
peoples real interests, real intentions, and do they or can they know them?
Or is it all going on systemically and as it were 'over their heads?' Or is
a snooty arrogance to claim this?
And Dan, I dont know a film that reflects this politic - but I think I need
a comedy.
Ross
