hmm, i am somewhat late in this discussion- but nevertheless, i think
Zatoichi is not one of kitano's best movies.
yes, it might entertain, yes, it might be shrude, weird & strangely
enjoyable, but- at least to me, it failed to convey any complex emotion
or multi-dimensionality in the characters, plot or style. it's
anime-esque in execution, where the shots do not linger and the
characters jump from the screen like porn popups.
then again, i guess this is exactly what kitano wanted to do. perhaps
i'm just offended because "Dolls" (his prior movie) is such a
masterpiece, and "Zatoichi" reminds me of Takashi Mike pulp (mind you,
*not* Visitor Q and Audition, but the rest of 'em)
