i love kitano's stuff.
"Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman" was a clever blend of entertainment,
with various 'traditional' japanese elements --- the village
festival, the rebuilding of dwellings, and sparse percussion like in
Noh and Kabuki --- nicely worked in.

yes, the ending was very American, but it's more a case of his
comedy/variety show stuff emerging, all in good fun. in other places
--- which impressed me even more --- kitano had the soundtrack in
syncopation with the peasants working the fields! now, that was just
lovely. talk about working the image and sound. also: these scenes
'oddly' enough resembled stuff in woodblock prints by masters like
Hokusai.
films like _Hani-Bi_, his 'gangster/Yakuza' stuff, is terrific, too,
with its still tableaux of guys in black & white suits and shades.
silence, stillness, not hours of dialogue, are some of the hallmarks
of what he --- and some other asian filmmakers --- are introducing to
the screens.
anyway, i'm not a scholar of Kitano, but i've very much enjoyed the
few films of his that i've seen.
