Hey,
I'm trying to write about zhang yimou's new movie, THE HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, and because
it seemed pretty unique, I'm more specifically trying to compile a list of movies that are like no
ther movies. My list has: Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Flowers of Shanghai (dir. Hou Hsiao Hsien), The
Actor's Revenge (dir. Kon Ichikowa), Prospero's books (dir. Peter Greenaway). It probably won't be
longer list than this, but I wanted to get the best selection.
I thought of some other movies which seemed unique but disqualified them: Bros. Quay movies
are a lot like Jan Svankmeier movies; a lot of HK wuxia movies--like butterfly murders--are really
unique if they weren't vaguely like each other; Alain Resnais's Providence is now a lot like
Memento, Eternal Sunshine, and 28 grams; movies that seem unique often only seem unique b/c
they seem like a lot of different movies--like kill bill or eternal sunshine; movies that would be
unique if their directors had made no other movies, like movies/shows by jacques tati, godard,
chris marker, dennis potter, patrick mcgoohan, and trinh minh ha.
My review of HERO is here, incidentally: http://www.reverseshot.com/hero.html
Any ideas?
Ken
