For a portrayal of Arabs in Preminger's "Exodus" see Ella Shohat's book
"Israeli Cinema: East/West and the Politics of Representation" and Yosefa
Loshitzky's first chapter (Screening the Birth of A Nation: Exodus
Revisited) in her book "Identity Politics on the Israeli Screen" (Austin,
Univ. of Texas Press, 2001).

Subject: Re: Articles on Hollywood portrayal of Arabs and Islam?
Andrew - excellent topic. I recommend Stephen Prince "Celluloid Heroes and
Smart Bombs: Hollywood at War in the Middle East" which is in Robert
Denton's edited book on The Media and the Persian Gulf War from 1993. It
directly addresses Hollywood's othering and demonization of Arabs and
Islam. Also, Cindy Weber (dept of politics at Leeds) has a new book called
Moral America which looks at post-Sept 11 Hollywood cinema. I don't think
its coming out til Sept in North America, but it might already be
available in the U.K. Not sure how much it deals with representing
Arabs/Islam per se, it should nonetheless be a useful read.
cheers,
Patricia
