For a nice gloss on horror film music see the article on The Bride of Frankenstein in the 2001 Special Edition on Horror of the print journal Film and Philosophy...the film is especially good in exemplifying several characteristic
musical elements in horror film scores, including the use of unresolved and minor chords. The author (James Wierzbecki) also raises an interesting question about whether the cognitive ability to recognize horrifying film music is innate or learned.
