The Senses
Friday 6 February 2004
The Senses is the second annual interdisciplinary conference to be
hosted by the London College of Music and Media at Thames Valley
University.
The conference will be interdisciplinary in nature, with papers from
cultural and critical theorists, musicologists, film theorists,
philosophers, art historians and literary scholars. It aims to include
the latest applications in theory and practice and we anticipate that
the some of the most radical interventions will arise from this
convergence. There are a number of international speakers, coming from
the USA, Australia and New Zealand, Germany and the Netherlands.
Keynote speakers:
Steven Connor, Professor of Modern Literature and Theory, Birkbeck
College, University of London
Johnny Golding (S.G./johnny de philo), Professor of Philosophy in the
Visual Arts and Communication Technologies, University of Greenwich
Panels will focus on thematic areas such as the audio and visual
disjunction/conjunction in film and video art; issues of gendered and
political sensoriality are treated in several papers while musical and
philosophical concerns converge in others. The enduring problematic of
prioritisation/hierarchisation is revisited in several papers.
The seven sessions:
Sensory memories, bodies and natures; corporealities; haptic and captive
acoustics; scopic and classificatory regimes; mimicry in the realm of
the senses and noises off: musical senses / senses of music.
