Dear friends - An essay published in Australia bearing on issues recently
discussed here may not be so well-known elsewhere in the world. It is a 1971
piece by Sylvia Lawson (a famous and award-winning essayist in my country)
called "The Peirce/Wollen Code Signs: Functions and Values", and it appeared
in 1977, issue 3 of THE AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF SCREEN THEORY. It goes right
through an illustration and discussion of index, sign, symbol, etc as
applied to cinema. It might be hard to get your hands on these days but it's
a useful text from a pioneering and optimistic moment in film
theory/criticism.
