Subject: Re: Heidegger film
Heidegger's relationship to national socialism, and to the Shoah
specifically, is complicated in the extreme. Your knee jerk response to a
rather innocuous post regarding a new film is, unfortunately, not
complicated at all.
So let's note a few things. First, I'll lay odds your concerns with
Heidegger mean you've never engaged his work on Holderlin's "Ister". The
lecture was delivered in '42, nearly eight years after he left the national
socialist party. And while it does interrogate the concept of the
"national", I would love to hear a more sustained argument for why this
particular text somehow supports a "never mind" approach to the events of
Auschwitz. Second, Der Spiegel did confront him, in an interview in, I
believe, 1966. His response is awkward, pathetically lacking, and not what
anyone might have hoped. But your comment that none would "confront" him is
factually incorrect. Third, the email in question reflected nothing like a
"genuflect" towards Heidegger, but rather an invitation for those who might
be interested in the film in question, even if that interest begins from the
possibility of critique. Fourth, and finally, using a listserv email for
antisemitic slander is impossible. Antisemitic liable, maybe, but not
slander. Not to seem too petty, but if you're going to rant sans warrants,
try ranting in a manner a bit more coherent.
Also, I'd recommend a few sources: Derrida's _Of Spirit_, Safranski's
_Martin Heidegger_ biography, and anything by Lacou-Labarthe dealing with
Heidegger. These sources will help assess Heidegger's link to national
socialism, but they'll require a more nuanced view of the relationship. And
the world for that matter.

Why would anyone want to watch a Heidegger film? Is "never again" now "never
mind"? During the Holocaust, Heidegger was an enthusiastic supporter of
slaughters (I don't care if he was putting his penis into Hannah Stern);
before and after the Shoah, Heidegger was an antisemite. From 1945 to his
death, no-one in Germany had the courage to confront him with his hatreds,
and, in England and the U.S., the academic genuflection to Heidegger's work
is nothing short of a severe test of one's gag reflex. That, in 2004, anyone
would deem it necessary to, somehow, obviate the fact Heidegger hated Jews,
approved of their extermination, etc., is in need of serious
self-examination. I must raise my voice in this matter, as a Jewish student
of cinema (especially scinema), and protest anyone using Film-Philosophy as
a vehicle of antisemitic slander, however "intellectual" it is disguised.
