There's The Man on the Train, a French film from last year starring Johnny
Halliday which begins & ends in a provincal station.
British films of course must include Brief Encounter and there's (at
least?) a couple of others I can think of that include good chase sequences
across railway tracks which culminate in the protagonists death - It Always
Rains on Sunday (1947 Robert Hamer) and The Good Die Young (1954, Lewis
Gilbert). The Red Shoes has already been mentioned - Ealing's The Titfield
Thunderbolt (1952)?
