Richard--
The place to begin (if possible) is the Forum des Images in Paris, which
mandates that its archive include every Hollywood film that depicts the city.
Even a glance at the Forum's index could be helpful... When I was last there,
the great treat (and perhaps a place to begin your essay) was to find a treaure
of Lubitsch's early Hollywood films, which invariably take place in Paris and
which use the city as a kind of other world where romance and desire are
allowed to take shape. Indeed, Paris becomes the privileged city of enjoyment
where Americans, and perhaps Hollywood, goes to entertain a wittier and more
eroticism narrative than would be possible in the states.
