One of the most memorable films to imagine a so-called Orient, is "Midnight Express". I find the film to be very much in line with the orientalist painting school of the 19th century. The most severe criticism addressed to the members of this school was that some of them even didn't bother to travel to those countries in order to create a more or less accurate representation.
