Quite honestly, i did not enjoy any of those films, but your question is
asking what inspired me to see them. Peer pressure would be the first
reason: my partner, who enjoyed the matrix and the first LOTR film, wanted
to see Reloaded and the Two Towers. As for T3, I enjoyed the first one
(and, at times, the second), so I took my chances on the Third, and was
more than disappointed (somewhat annoyed) by its flat and predictable
narrative, not to mention its gratuitous deployment of 'special effects'
that served to shock and awe its audience more than anything else, it
seems.
I can't think of current writing that * celebrates* the contemporary SF
film, but there are several smart SF scholars and buffs who write well on
SF films of the 80s and early 90s. They include Vivian Sobchack, Claudia
Springer, Scott Bukatman, Constance Penley, and Sean Cubbitt & Ziaddun
(sp?) Sardar, who edit an anthology on the Other in SF cinema. There are
many more out there -- your topic is fortunately a popular one! Good
luck!
