In speaking of values, it strikes me that a commonality amidst south
asia and east asia (and south east asia, etc) is buddha dharma -- and
thus a comparison/contrast could be made on films nominally about the
subject, or reflecting the influence.
WIsdom Publications is bringing out a book on Buddhism and cinema, and
there is now an International Buddhist Film Festival (http://ibff.org)
responsive to possibilities of mounting screenings in your locality,
for further studies.
Perhaps too broad a response to your specific question, but well -
