instead of answering pointbypoint i will just respond
to what your question touches on in my heart of hearts,
okay? crouching tiger hidden dragon is a martial arts
movie but it is also high art and has been acknowledged
as such. there is a huge genre of films that if they
starred african americans would be called the asian
version of blaxploitation -- why?
but crouching tiger by ang lee is definitive cinema. is
The Ice Storm or The Hulk asian cinema? all three of
those films represent Ang's vision....see the line that
is drawn?
to look at it another way -- eat drink man woman made me
want to cry. so did joy luck club. Shogun did not
move me as much -- is that because it is a movie about
asian culture written by a european, james clavell?
questions abound...these are just insights. great
question though it was fun to answer...
also i may add that the entrance of anime as a film
genre raises many questions. anime covers many areas,
both the fantastica and the absolutely mundane -- yet it
is all one genre, anime, because of its national origin.
animation on the other hand gets another prefix first --
if it is not of the familiar japanes style one has to
assign it prefixes -- comedy like bugs bunny -- on and
on.
