'Johnie Got His Gun' (1971) ends with Dalton Trumbo (the [blacklisted]
screenwriter, novelist and in this instance, director) appearing in the film
and giving an impassioned plea to the audience. This would be one of the
closest instances of the author addressing his viewer, although many others
have done it.
I'm thinking especially of someone like Woody Allen in 'Annie Hall', and
even Howard Hawks has directly appealed to the viewer with the opener to
the original Scarface (although this is only in the form of card titles).
