I think Bush did run a superior campaign. Unlike Bill Clinton, whose folks were good at damage control, Kerry's forces let the swift boat ads take hold before doing much about them. Further, they did not stress the class warfare theme enough, nor did Kerry distinguish his attitude towards Iraq from the President's.
But for me, the key moments were at the end of the third debate, when both men were asked about their families and their faith. Bush came off as a loving husband and father, and as a sincere man of faith. Kerry made a joke about marrying above himself, and botched any attempt at devout catholicism.
Kerry the Democrat lost the Catholic vote for the first time in a long time. It may have something to do with the fct that he has the charisma of a carrot. It makes one long for Al Gore, who actually won the popular vote.
