This might be of intrest to all
Coral Reef Research Assistance Expedition, Seychelles, Indian Ocean
Global Vision International (GVI)has been invited by the Seychelles
government and the NGO, Nature Protection Society of the Seychelles, to
assist their priority biological study and conservation programs, coral
reef research, whale shark migration, turtle nesting research, trail
clearance and foreign species eradication. Global Vision International’s
third coral reef research expedition supports and assists the work of
local government Marine Parks, Ministry of Environment, Island Development
Company (IDC), and the local NGO’s Nature Protection Trust of the
Seychelles (NPTS) and Marine Conservation Society of the Seychelles
(MCSS), plus international NGO’s and universities.
Project Aims:
Preliminary meetings with local government agencies IDC, Marine Parks,
Ministry of Environment and local NGO’s NPTS and MCSS identified the
following projects that were deemed a priority:
• Mangrove to pelagic (including lagoons and reef crest and fore
reef) characterization and monitoring through SCUBA diving surveys.
• Sea turtle nesting surveys.
• Whale shark migration surveys.
• Trail clearance.
• Foreign plant species eradication.
• Train local fishermen and guides in diving and survey techniques to
aid sustainable development
• Assist in the development of the Ecological Research and Awareness
Centre.
• Conduct activities on behalf of our local partners, Marine Parks,
Ministry of Environment, Island Development Company, Nature Protection
Trust of the Seychelles and Marine Conservation Society of the Seychelles,
sharing all data to help them achieve their aims.
We are now seeking research assistants to assist our work in the
Seychelles from June 2004 onwards. Expedition members should be science /
biology / marine science graduates or students or have the relevant
previous experience.
