Roots of Learning courses here at Schumacher College, UK
These five-day residential courses are aimed at educators who
want to find ways to integrate an ecological perspective into their
schools. The first, "Transformative Learning", takes place during October
half-term and features Ed O'Sullivan, author of Transformative Learning and
Director of the Transformative Learning Centre in Toronto. In 2005,
"Global Education" features David Selby, an international authority in the
field and now Professor of Continuing Professional Development at the
University of Plymouth. Course details are given below. These courses are
offered at the specially reduced rate of £300, including accommodation.
Although previous Roots of Learning courses were open only to UK educators,
we are now opening them to educators from around the world, as we feel this
international dimension will be particularly valuable given the focus of
these two courses.
We run these courses on a tight budget and do not have large sums available
for publicity. We'd therefore be grateful for your help in disseminating
this information through any networks, newsletters, conferences, etc. that
you feel would be appropriate. We can supply you with A5 flyers, or send a
better formatted announcement for publication.
Please let me know if you can help in any way.
With best wishes, Inga Page, Programme Coordinator

RESIDENTIAL COURSES FOR TEACHERS AT SCHUMACHER COLLEGE, DEVON
ROOTS OF LEARNING: TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING
Ed O'Sullivan
October 24-29, 2004
This course will explore a form of education that sets the needs of the
planet over the needs of the market place. Transformative learning
involves experiencing a deep, shift in the basic premises of thought,
feelings, and actions. It is a shift of consciousness that fundamentally
alters our way of being in the world, affecting our understanding of
ourselves, our relationships with other humans and with the natural world.
The course is intended for both primary and secondary school teachers and
is designed to help them develop classroom curricula and practices that
foster education for a sustainable planet.
Ed O'Sullivan is a Professor of Education at the Ontario Institute for
Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Director of the
Transformative Learning Centre and author most recently of Transformative
Learning: Building Educational Vision for the 21st Century.
ROOTS OF LEARNING: GLOBAL EDUCATION
David Selby
April 3-8, 2005
Global Education is a holistic system of learning which is informed by
ecological principles. Much more than just cross-cultural understanding,
it employs an integrated approach which sees the interconnections between
lands, peoples, social, cultural and natural phenomena as forming an
unbroken whole with the self - the cognitive, affective, physical and
spiritual dimensions of the human being. It addresses issues of peace,
social and environmental justice, and sustainability. This course will
employ a diversity of interactive, experiential and convivial learning
approaches, and will offer practical guidance on how these approaches can
be translated to the primary and secondary school classroom, transforming
our education paradigm from conflict to cooperation and from parochial to
global.
David Selby is Professor of Continuing Professional Development in the
Faculty of Education, University of Plymouth. He is an international
authority on the theory and practice of citizenship, global, environmental,
human rights, and life skills education.
These course are only for teachers or others currently working in education.
Course fee: £300
