show positive films about our accomplishments. All such events are free.
Adults, children, schools , refugees and community groups are encouraged to
attend.

Paul Robeson
was a famous African-American athlete, academic, singer, actor, and
advocate for the civil rights of people around the world. In 1915 he won an
academic scholarship to Rutgers University. Despite violence and racism
from team-mates, he won awards in baseball, basketball, and track.
He practiced as a lawyer but left when a white secretary refused to take
dictation from him. He used his art to promote African history and
culture. He lived in Camden, London, where he earned international acclaim
for his lead role in Othello. He was only the second black man to appear in
this role.
He sang for peace and justice in 25 languages. Among his friends were
Kenyan leader Jomo Kenyatta, India's Nehru, historian Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois,
anarchist Emma Goldman, and writers James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway. In
1933, Robeson donated the proceeds of his play to Jewish refugees fleeing
Hitler's Germany.
In 1945, he lobbied President Truman to support an anti-lynching law. He
questioned the draft for African Americans just as Muhammed Ali was to do
three decades later. His concerts were cancelled and the US government
withdrew his passport for 8 years
He met with Albert Einstein to discuss the prospects for world peace and
argued with the British Prime Minister for a Race Relations law in the
1930s. He was the most famous black man in the world but many people have
never heard of him. Find out why.

Dear writer/agent,
Our School - a poetry anthology for Pan Macmillan
Earlier this year I sent out a brief for this poetry anthology, and many of
you sent me poems, for which thanks! I was a little slow in getting back to
everyone I suppose I could best sum it up by
saying that I'm looking for the universal through the specific - ie, I want
the final collection to reflect children's experiences of primary school in
a pretty deep and interesting way. So although I want lots of poems about
specific subjects - and I'll be listing those further on in this brief -
I'd like there to be something in each poem that touches on the universal.
The original idea came to me when I was listening to Under Milk Wood, and
Ithought how wonderful it would be if I could put together a kind of Under
Milk Wood about school for kids (and for teachers and parents, too!).I've
had lots of poems in about funny things happening in classrooms, quirky
teachers etc, but (apart from a number of good poems about school
secretaries - now what does that tell us?) very few covering the subjects I
listed in my first brief. So the field is wide open... anyway, here's what
I said in the original brief...
If you are still interested, please conact Tony Bradman for the original
brief its long an detailed but at least gives you a very clear idea of
what he is looking for.
I am currently seeking contributions to an anthology of original poems
entitled Our School, and aimed at primary age children (7-11).
