An Akademi/ICA collaboration

NO MAN'S LAND EXPLORING SOUTH ASIANNESS
Saturday 22 May 2004 10am - 4pm, ICA Cinema 1

'South Asianness': new nationality or convenient catch all? The term
has achieved wide currency today - often for the sake of political
expedience - but it is hotly disputed within the diaspora as well as
the regions themselves. Is 'South Asianness' a diverse and resilient
state of being or just 'Indianness' in disguise? To celebrate its 25th
anniversary, Akademi, in collaboration with the ICA, presents Sunil
Khilnani (author of The Idea of India and a forthcoming biography of
Nehru) in a one-day symposium examining the origin, development and
relevance of the term to those living within the bounds of this
pan-national label.

With Yasmin Alibhai-Brown (The Independent), Jeevan Deol (St John's
College, Cambridge), Andree Grau (Roehampton University Surrey), Daud
Ali (School of Oriental & African Studies), Shobana Jeyasingh (Shobana
Jeyasingh Dance Company), Keith Khan (Moti Roti), Pavan Varma (Nehru
Centre), Parminder Vir (Carlton TV), Sanjoy Roy (The Guardian), Sanjay
Sharma (University of East London).

SWEETPETER
He was born with seven lives. He's used six.
12 May - 19 June 2004
@ Polka Theatre
240 The Broadway, Wimbledon, London SW19

It was 1787 when the British founded the province of Freedom in West Africa
- a home for liberated slaves. It was to be a new beginning for a woman and
her baby son, Sweetpeter.
In 2004, Sweetpeter finds himself in London, having fled his ravaged
homeland. His 200-year journey has seen the 'liberation' of Africa and the
brutality of civil war. Born with seven lives, he has already used six.
Will Sweetpeter find freedom before he uses up his last life?
Sweetpeter is an inspirational new play for African audiences by John
Retallack and Usifu Jalloh. Shot through with magic, dynamic action and
featuring original music and dance by Jalloh (Sierra Leone) and Landing
Mane (Senegal), Sweetpeter tells a powerful and compelling story of one
boy's search for his true identity.

Wording Identity: A Creative Writing Workshop
with Shaun Levin and Royce Mahawatte
Mondays, June 7 - July 19, 7.30-9pm
How many identities do you have? What are the stories that make up who you

changes? In this practical creative writing workshop we will explore and
play with personal stories, family stories, and the stories we invent about
ourselves and others. Youill get to experiment with language and ways of
telling stories, and work towards finding a writing voice that is uniquely
your own.
The workshop is open to all GLBT folk.

Shaun Levin has been teaching writing for ten years. His novella, Seven
Sweet Things, was published in 2003, and his stories appear in over 30

* London Schools Arts Service - Call for artists

The London Schools Arts Service (LONSAS) launched its website earlier
this year at www.lonsas.org.uk.

As part of its service to teachers in the capital, LONSAS aims to help
schools identify appropriate artists and arts organisation able to come
and work in school, or who provide education work at their own site. To
achieve this aim, the website includes a comprehensive database of
artists that is maintained by the national directory of artists in
education, Artscape. Visitors to the LONSAS site will be able to search
the entries by artform, borough, target groups, special educational
needs, curriculum area, work undertaken and more.

We wish to see all organisations and individuals with good track records
in arts education listed and have set up a simple online form for you to
register. Registration is free to artists and to those using the site to
find arts partners.

To register please visit http://www.artscape.org.uk/register

In order to ensure that all organisations and individuals listed are
appropriately qualified and prepared for working in schools, we are
requiring that all those listed provide relevant evidence. This process
is being made as straightforward as possible, assisting when required in
processing Disclosure checks and providing insurance.

Once registered, your entry will be searchable through both the LONSAS
site as well as the national database, thus giving your work maximum
exposure. Please note that artists already registered with Artscape are
automatically LONSAS associate artists.

For further information, or if you have any news items you would like to
see featured on www.lonsas.org.uk, then please email Mary Brown at
[log in to unmask]

The LONSAS team will be working closely with artists, arts organisations
and funding bodies to bring together in one place for the first time all
the information and advice necessary to help every teacher in the
capital wishing to engage in creative arts activities.

--------------------------------------------------------------1. RESEARCHER
TRAINING PROGRAMME 2004

Channel 4 and The Research Centre are delighted to present the Researcher
Training Programme. This year, weve increased the number of places on our
12-month training programme to sixteen, which means we can equip more
people than ever to enter our industry.

Diversity is a key issue for us and were keen to recruit from a range of
communities. This is thanks to a major Channel 4 initiative that aims to
increase the range of voices in the television industry, so that it
reflects the diverse society it serves.

We want people who are ready to spend a year with a leading independent
production company. The type who can offer a unique modern view of the
world and who want to gain a thorough grounding in the basics of television
production.

To be considered for this rare training opportunity, you must have
broad-based general knowledge, good writing skills, a positive attitude and
a strong desire to learn. Its also important that you have a clean driving
licence, an understanding of diverse communities and the ability to
communicate well. Theres no guarantee of a position at the end of the
programme, but you will have all the skills you need to become a
fully-fledged researcher.

As ethnic minorities are under represented in television, we would
particularly encourage applications from these communities. This is a
training scheme under sections 37 and 38 of the Race Relations Act 1976.
To apply for the scheme please download all parts of the information pack
from http://www.researchcentre.co.uk/research/ and complete the required
forms. As part of your application, include a letter explaining what you
have to offer, why you should be selected and how the scheme will
contribute to your professional and personal development. Also send us an
