Dear All
After I posted my question regarding loss of statistics after a Bb upgrade I
had an alarming number of replies from other places that are seeing exactly
the same problem :-( Happily we now have a resolution for our problem which
I am posting here in case it can help some of you guys although it may only
be relevant to Unix people.
The problem was caused by incorrect ownership and permissions on
/usr/local/blackboard/logs/update-tools/update-tool-log.txt
Before our fix our file was owned by root:root and had 744 permissions. Now
we have changed it so that it looks like this:
$ls -l /usr/local/blackboard/logs/update-tools/update-tool-log.txt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bbuser nobody 85459 Jul 22 02:07
/usr/local/blackboard/logs/update-tools/update-tool-log.txt
and the statistics have now started working :-)
I suspect that this ownership problem is indicative of problems with the Bb
update/install procedure which has failed to change ownerships and
permissions within the directory structure (there are many other files in
our Bb hierarchy that are owned by root rather than our Bb user). Since I
haven't yet done a Bb upgrade myself I'm not 100% sure but I have a nasty
feeling that there may well be other permission problems lurking that we
have not yet come across.
Many thanks go to Jon Adamson from the University of Huddersfield for
pointing us in the right direction :-)

Subject: Loss of statistics after Bb and Java upgrade
Hi
When we upgraded to Blackboard 6.1.0.1 from 6.0.11 we also had to
upgrade Java from 1.3 to 1.4.2 and since this upgrade the system
statistics in the standard system reports are no longer working. When
you view any of the Standard System Reports, eg Overall summary, users
stats, course stats etc, the statistics are correctly reported up until
the date of upgrade and thereafter they are all zero. However, if you
view course statistics from within a particular course the statistics
are fine.
I had a look at the tables owned by the bb_bb60_stats users and all
those tables contain 0 rows.
Has anyone else come across this?
