Jane Austen Society of North America
2005 Annual General Meeting
Conference Title: Jane Austen's Letters in Fact and Fiction
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
October 7-9, 2005
The Steering Committee for the 2005 Annual General Meeting of the Jane Austen
Society of North America invites proposals for original, jargon-free
presentations relating to our conference theme, Jane Austen's Letters in Fact
and
Fiction. Presentations will be included in breakout sessions on Friday, October
7,
and Saturday, October 8, 2005, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Milwaukee,
Wisconsin.
Letters in Fact: Jane Austen's letters are the most significant primary
source material concerning her life and work, providing autobiographical
details
about her personality, writing, daily life, amusements, and relationships.
Austen's correspondence also offers significant insight into English middle
class
life during an era of military, economic, and societal challenge. Proposals
relating to Austen's letters may focus on any of these topics.
Letters in Fiction: Austen's fiction, from epistolary Juvenilia through
final masterpieces, exhibits rich and diverse use of correspondence. We invite
proposals examining this aspect of Austen's artistry, whether through close
study
of her own texts or through comparative study of Austen's place in the
employment of letters in narrative.
We encourage creative formats for breakout sessions, including slide
presentations, panel discussions, and point-counterpoint debates, as well as
traditional lectures. Sessions should be approximately 40 minutes in length,
allowing
time for questions afterward.
Please submit a one page abstract of your breakout proposal (including media
requirements), with a cover sheet indicating your name, affiliation, mailing
and email addresses, telephone numbers and a brief biography. Deadline:
September 14, 2004.
Send proposal by mail or email attachment to:
