Byron Society of America will be sponsoring travel grants for graduate
students presenting papers at this and other Byron conferences.

ANNNOUNCEMENT
30th Annual International Byron Conference

August 15-20, 2004
L'Université de Moncton, serving the French-speaking Acadian community of
Canada's three Maritime provinces, is pleased to host the 30th
International Byron Conference in 2004 and to welcome Byronists from around
the world.
Registration for the Conference will take place Sunday, August 15, in the
Taillon Building, l'Université de Moncton from 14:00 to 16:00. Since the
year 2004 is the quatercentenary of French settlement in North America, and
August 15th is the national holiday of the Acadian people, the City will be
the host to celebrations of many kinds - dance, outdoor concerts, le
tintamarre. The evening on the 15th will be free for the delegates to
wander through the downtown and to take in these many celebrations.
The next three days will be taken up by the academic portion of the
conference.
Professor Ian Balfour will give his keynote address the morning of the
16th, and the academic sessions will proceed until Wednesday afternoon, the
18th. A reception hosted jointly by the City of Moncton and l'Université
de Moncton will take place at the Delta Beauséjour Hotel the evening of
the 16th. The next evening, that of the 17th, delegates will travel north
to the nearby village of Cocagne for a lobster supper and boat tour.
Preparations are underway for a unique spectacle of dance and music the
evening of the 18th at the Capitol Theatre, Moncton's finest performance
hall.
Two optional day tours have been arranged for those delegates who wish to
stay on. On Thursday, the morning the 19th, delegates will travel by coach
to Canada's island province, Prince Edward Island. Once in the capital
city, Charlottetown, we will visit the Parliament and Government House, the
birthplace of Canada.
On the return leg of the day trip, we will dine at the Cape Jourimain
Nature Centre, located at the foot of the Confederation Bridge which
connects New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island across the Northumberland
Strait. Friday the 20th, we will travel to The Hopewell Rocks on the shore
of the Bay of Fundy. The unusually high tides of the Bay have sculpted the
shoreline into magnificent shapes. The conference will end with a luncheon
at the Hopewell Rocks, returning to Moncton by 15:00.
Accomodation for those attending the conference has been reserved at the
university residences. The university offers single or double occupancy by
the day or week. For those not wishing to stay on campus, twenty rooms have
been reserved at the Delta Beauséjour Hotel located in the centre of the
city, a five-minute taxi ride from the university. (Those who choose to
stay at the Delta will pay a supplement of approximately $500.). Most meals
are included for those staying at the residences with the exception of the
evening meal of Wednesday, the 18th. Tickets for the Capitol Theatre are
also included. There will be a separate price for day scholars.
Moncton has a brand new International Airport, but most flights from Europe
and The United States make connections to Moncton in Boston, Halifax,
Montréal or Toronto. Be advised that Canada is very big country and that
you should not plan on driving from Toronto to Moncton unless you wish to
spend 17 hours in a car. Halifax International Airport offers daily flights
non-stop to Heathrow, for example, and it is about a three- hour drive from
Moncton by car.
Early indications of your intention to attend the conference would help
considerably. We expect to have a credit card facility up and running early
in the New Year, thanks to the efforts of Maureen and Ken.
A $250 non-refundable deposit in Canadian currency, or the equivalent, is
requested by the 2nd of February. The cost for the full conference will be
$960 (Canadian) or £450. A registration form will follow on this site.

L’Université de Moncton, serving the French-speaking Acadian community
of Canada’s three Maritime provinces, is pleased to host the 30th
International Byron Conference in 2004 and to welcome Byronists from around
the world.
The theme of the conference will be “Byron and the Romantic Sublime.”
From the irrational as a response to the Sublime in the theory of Longinus,
to the jeopardy of the self as an experience of delightful pain in Burke,
to art as the expression of subjectivity in Kant, the Sublime offers many
points of access to Byron’s work.
Proposals for twenty-minute papers (in English or in French) exploring the
work of Byron as an expression, example, or critique of the Sublime in its
many manifestations are welcome.
Ian Balfour, the keynote speaker, has recently published The Rhetoric of
Romantic Prophecy, (Stanford UP, 2002), and is currently writing a book on
the sublime. He is also co‑editing with Atom Egoyan, Subtitles: On The
Foreigness of Film; with Eduardo Cadava, And Justice for All? The Claims of
Human Rights; and with Lindsay Waters, The Paul de Man Reader.
The deadline for the submission of proposals is February 1, 2004.
