The work of the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) in Sub-Saharan
Africa; a statistician’s viewpoint
Abstract:
Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease endemic in many parts of
Sub-Saharan Africa and affects approximately 200 million people
world-wide. It is the third most prevalent disease on the African
continent after HIV-Aids and malaria, although it is simple and
inexpensive to treat. The SCI, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation, is undertaking a mass-scale treatment programme in 8 African
countries and aims to reduce the impact of Schistosomiasis.
The research side of the programme is carried out by the Monitoring
and Surveillance unit, based at Imperial College London.
The seminar will describe the work of the SCI; the issues of marrying
a treatment programme in developing countries with research requirements;
some statistical aspects of the disease; and present some findings so far.
All welcome.
