EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The Medical Research Council Programme on AIDS in Uganda, based at the
Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), Entebbe, Uganda is seeking to
recruit a suitably qualified Statistician and a Trial Co-ordinator to
join a team of researchers at the Medical Research Council Programme.
1. STATISTICIAN:
The successful candidate will be based at UVRI, Entebbe, but may be
required to work in the field stations in Masaka and Kyamulibwa and at
other study sites at Entebbe and Kampala from time to time. Main duties
will include the management and analysis of study data. S(he) will
assist senior scientific staff with respect to study design, data
collection, and analysis. There will be opportunities to contribute to
and initiate scientific publications. This post is suitable for
statisticians interested in medical research or other academic career.
The incumbent will report to the Senior Programme Statistician.
Qualifications and Experience: Applicants must posses an honours Degree
of Bachelor of Statistics (B.Stat.) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and
MUST have a Masters or PhD degree in any of the following fields:
Medical Statistics, Epidemiology, Bio statistics, Statistics, Applied
Statistics, and Computing; and at least 2 years experience in
statistical analysis using STATA/EPIINFO and in database management
using Ms Access and FoxPro/Dbase. Experience in medical research is
desirable but not a requirement.
2. CLINICAL TRIAL CO-ORDINATOR:
This post is for a two-year feasibility study in preparation of a
possible phase II/III HIV vaccine trial in Masaka district, Uganda where
the successful candidate will be based. The work will involve the
recruitment and examination of trial participants in rural communities,
the provision of medical care to these participants and the careful
documentation of data.
As a key member of the dedicated trial team, the successful candidate
will lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the study and
contribute to the preparation of the phase II/III trial.
Qualification and experience: Applicants must posses a science degree
(or equivalent) with postgraduate qualification (MSc) and working
experience in epidemiology and/or statistics. The candidate should be
self-motivated, organised, computer literate and have effective
communication skills. Clinical research experience in HIV or other
health related work is desirable.
These positions are based on a local contract within the MRC Uganda
salary scheme. The salary is attractive and will be based on
qualifications and experience. Financial assistance can be provided to
successful non-Ugandan applicants for their move to Uganda. The
appointment will be for 2 years initially and is renewable.
