Centre for Applied Social Surveys
Short Course
Analysis of Survey Data
Supported by the ESRC
Professor Ray Chambers and Professor Chris Skinner
12 May 2004
Royal Statistical Society, London
CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by
the National Centre for Social Research, the University of
Southampton and
the University of Surrey
Course Objectives:
* To introduce participants to recent developments in statistical
methods for the analysis of survey data;
* To improve participants’ understanding of the statistical theory
underlying these methods;
* To facilitate reading of the recent book on “Analysis of Survey
Data”, edited by Professors Chambers and Skinner.
Course Content:
Overviews will be given of the following topics:
* Approaches to statistical inference in the analysis of survey data,
including likelihood-based methods;
* Categorical response modelling for complex survey data;
* Regression modelling for complex survey data;
* Analysis of longitudinal survey data;
* Analysis of survey data, subject to different forms of
incompleteness.
The course will include time for questions and discussion. There will
be no exercises or computer-based work.
Target Audience:
The course is aimed at an audience with a strong statistical
background interested in statistical methods for analysing survey
data. The course is particularly targeted at researchers who have a
good understanding of the ‘standard’ theory underlying a variety of
statistical modelling methods, such as regression, and who are
interested in the extension of the theory and methods to data
collected using complex sampling schemes, such as stratification and
multi-stage sampling.
Pre-requisites:
Participants should be familiar with:
* common statistical modelling methods, such as regression, categorical
data analysis and survival analysis, and the basic statistical theory
underlying these methods, as set out in standard textbooks;
* standard sampling designs, such stratified sampling and multistage
sampling, and associated estimation methods for standard population
parameters such as means and totals.
Course Materials:
Participants will receive a copy of:
R.L.Chambers and C.J.Skinner eds. (2003) Analysis of Survey Data.
Chichester: John Wiley and Sons.
For further details of this book, browse under “Mathematics and
Statistics” and then “Survey Research Methods and Sampling” on
http://www.wileyeurope.com
Participants will also receive copies of slides used in
presentations.
The Instructors:
Ray Chambers is Director of Southampton Statistical Sciences Research
Institute and Professor of Social Statistics at the University of
Southampton. His main research interests are in analysis of complex
survey data, business survey estimation methodology, including
calibration theory, census post-enumeration adjustments, small area
estimation, outlier robust estimation and editing and imputation
methods.
Chris Skinner is Director of CASS and Professor of Social Statistics
at the University of Southampton. His main research interests are in
statistical aspects of survey methodology, including sampling,
nonresponse, measurement error and disclosure control. He co-edited
an earlier book on ‘Analysis of Complex Survey Data’ with Tim Holt
and Fred Smith (published by Wiley in 1989) of which the book to be
discussed on this course is a successor.
Fee:
The standard fee is £120. Because of ESRC support, a number of
bursaries are available which reduce this fee to £60 - applicants
must be full-time students, UK academic staff or ESRC-funded
researchers. The fee includes a copy of the book “Analysis of Survey
Data” (recommended retail price £65) and other course materials as
referred to above, lunch and morning and afternoon tea.
Location:
The course will be held at the Royal Statistical Society, 12 Errol
Street, London EC1Y 8LX. Telephone 020 7638 8998.
Duration:
The course will begin with coffee and registration at 9.30am and end
at 5.00 pm on 12 May 2004.
