Roger Thomas and Elaine McColl
10-11 March 2004, University of York
CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by the National Centre for
Social Research, the University of Southampton and the University of
Surrey
Course Content
This course will introduce participants to the principles and methods
of survey project management. This includes:
Defining survey parameters (research aims, target population, sample
size, respondents etc) in terms that lend themselves to operational
design and planning.
Analysing the different survey stages, the activities to be
undertaken and the skills that will be required in order to conduct
the survey successfully.
Identifying key interdependencies between activities and stages and
scheduling and time-tabling them accordingly.
Estimating, costing and procuring the resources needed to carry out
the survey to the required technical standards, on time and within
budget.
Addressing key design and operational issues, such as mode of data
collection and how to obtain an acceptable rate of response.
Deciding whether to contract out all or parts of the survey
operation.
Controlling and managing survey operations with data completeness and
data quality in mind.
Assessing risks and building in operational robustness.
Identifying stakeholders in the survey process (sponsors, users,
financial controllers, respondents) and dealing with ethical issues
that may arise.
The principles will be illustrated using as the example a postal self-
completion survey. Comparisons will be drawn with field interview
surveys.
Fee
£300 (includes course materials, lunches and morning and afternoon
tea). Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available
which reduce the fee to £65 - applicants must be full-time students,
