At Aston we have had anonymous marking for many years.
We tried fold-down corners, but these were expensive, and were not
liked by academic staff for reasons of hygiene.
We now issue all students with a randomly generated six-digit
examination number; this is printed on the ID card which is required to
be visible throughout the examination. Attendance lists are by name,
and show the allocated desk number. Each candidate completes an
attendance slip (by name) which the Chief Invigilator checks against a
copy of the attendance list, absentees and additional candidates being
entered on a report form.
If a candidate does not have their ID card, identity and examination
number are confirmed by an assistant invigilator going to the
Examinations Office during the course of the examination.
Occasionally, scripts are found to bear the desk number, the Student
ID number or even the barcode number, but these are all traceable to
the student examination number (by staff outside of the academic
departments.)
Marks are moved from numbers to names by support staff, before the
examination boards.
