In this context note the recently published Department of Health
consultation: "Regulation of Health Care Staff in England & Wales" (March
2004) which asks for opinions on professional regulation of health care and
therapy assistants and "Pathology Assistant Practitioners".

This would be the ideal opportunity to include phlebotomists under this
umbrella but there are implications for training and funding. A registration
fee could be very significant compared to a phlebotomist's salary.
