The plasma concentration of pre-albumin decreases in concentration during an acute phase response.
The mechanisms are increased micro vascular permeability and decreased synthesis.
This fall occurs within hours of injury.
Therefore pre-albumin has limited usefulness in patients with ongoing inflammation/ infection
