The Jewish General Hospital has one of the most diverse patient basis you
can imagine. I have never come across this before but have come across
request for a male phlebotomist for a religious man etc. While we accept the
need to be culturally very sensitive we do not cater for beliefs which
require us to alter any of our policies which relate to quality, safety etc
The patient can always refuse to have the sample taken, as it is within his
rights, but I would never accept his desire to have only one name. I do have
several very religious Muslims who are residents here I will ask them their
opinion. I am sure I could easily contact a Mullah if you wanted

Subject: Names on samples
Very polite and reasonable letter to our hospital PALS (Patient Advice
and Liaison Service) office from a Muslim requesting us to review our
policy of insisting that both 1st name and surname/family name are on
urine and faeces samples. He understands and has accepted the policy on
blood samples. I have been asked to respond today.
His first name is Muhammad and he considers that labelling such samples
with a holy name is disrespectful. "some could take a serious offence
and turn this into a major issue". The same could be true for any of the
100 or so other names for Allah frequently used by Muslims, often
written on forms as either surname and 1st name. We even have 3 patients
on file with the ID Mohammed Mohammed, all quite different dates of
birth.
Our policy throughout Pathology for all samples is both names plus date
of birth and ID number if a hospital patient on all samples.
What do others do ?
Paul
