The following discipline-based CPD event will be of interest to staff in
mathematical and computing science departments in Northern Ireland. Full
details can be found at http://www.ics.ltsn.ac.uk/events/maths/ulster.html
We would be grateful if you would pass the following message on within your
institution. The next workshop in the series will be held in Birmingham on 17
November.
Mathematics for Computing - a day workshop
University of Ulster, 28 May 2004
---------------------------------------
As many in higher education are aware, the inadequate mathematical preparation
of students entering higher education has become a serious problem over the
last 15 years. This so-called ‘maths problem’ has long been recognised by
engineering academics, but it is fast becoming an issue in computer science
too.
As a response to this the LTSN subject centre Information and Computing Science
and the LTSN Maths, Stats & OR Network are running a series of workshops on
mathematics for computing. The first of these was held in Glasgow on 24 March,
and the second will be at the University of Ulster on 28 May; an event to which
you are warmly invited.
This is an event which any academic who teaches mathematics to computer
scientists, or any computer science lecturer who finds themselves bewildered by
their students’ apparent lack of mathematical knowledge, will find useful.
Online booking and a preliminary programme for the day are available at
