Vernon, I'm not going to flame you, but since I presume I am the 'one
author' to whom you refer, I might perhaps be allowed to explain the reason
for my behaviour.
The problem with engaging in discussions via media such as E-mail lists and
Newsgroups is that it is so easy to lose context and chronology - a problem
does not arise with real-time discussions 'around a table' or whatever. I
therefore find that the simplest, most effect and quickest approach is to
reply separately to each message I receive on which I want to comment - so,
if four people have written things I wish to comment on, I will generate
four 'replies'. If I had unlimited time, I'm sure it would be
intellectually more satisfactory (for me as well as everyone else) to plan
and construct structured 'essays' dealing with all the points raised in all
the messages 'on my desk' - but, like most of us, I don't have unlimited
time, and therefore find that 'clicking on Reply' is the most expeditious
course!
Kind Regards
John
