Dear Keith,
This left foot business reminds me of a Swiss joke:
Question: What is the difference between a duck?
Answer: Both feet are the same.

Dear Jan
consciousness is not a priority for Rugby League!
Colleagues have reminded me that the UK is more complex than I suggested
- Public Schools are "private" in some parts of the "United Kingdom" and not in
others. No wonder us Aussies are so confused - we have even more space to carry
on as ex-Poms (and ex-Irish and ex-Scottish and ex-Welsch and ex-Northumbrian
and ex-etc)
Of course left feet are left feet everywhere except in the land of the
left-handed where they are right feet.
This last puzzle is at least relevant to design - the other ones are
relevant to "style"?

Ok, I said I wouldn't talk about Rugby but . . .
When we first came to Oz, we were given free tickets to see the
Brisbane
Broncos play (Rugby League). One of the "town louts almost went to heaven
right
before our eyes. He might have been there for about 5 minutes but nobody
really
noticed as he was lying on the field unconscious, the game kept going.
Once
consciousness was returned he wasn't allowed to play for the rest of the
game.
He seemed ok with that too. Actually I don't really think he knew where
he was.
Maybe he was still in heaven.

Just to add to the Rubgy nonsense -
there are two kinds of Rugby - Union which is played by gentlemen
and
League which is played by town louts.
That is, Private Schools (OZ) play Union as part of their
upper-class
certification (UK this is of course Public Schools) - working class
"louts from
the town" play League to certify their class. There are trips to heaven
for
upper class non-louts whereas the town louts just get paid lots of money.
The other possible origin for the tag of "lout" comes from the one
true
form of Football which we in OZ call Soccer. That is, for true Football
players, Rugby is a lout's game no matter whether you are from town or
Public
School. This doesn't explain "town" which the Union/League account does.
No wonder the second largest book sales for Oxford are for their
English-to-English dictionaries. (Bible comes first)

In OZ the Union dudes are known as Rugger-Buggers (does that need
elaboration?)
"Rugby" has come to be the common name for "Rugby Union" and
"League" has
come to be the common name for "Rugby League".
>>> Ken Friedman <[log in to unmask]> Sometimes it is difficult to
believe things that
may actually be true. Also I certainly didn't mean to imply that
Rugby
was
actually a "game played by town louts" although to be completely
accurate, town
louts (whoever they may be) probably have been seen to play rugby
at some
time
