I agree with Rob, that discussions about practice and teaching may
provide a spark for all those interested in design (regardless of
category or comfort zone) to move to (what you have quoted Buchanan
as stating) 'new approaches to understanding design involved moving
beyond traditional categories and traditional approaches. He raised
the challenging problem of asking designers to move beyond the
comfort zone of traditional design categories, particularly where
design research is involved in improving design practice.'
I have had comfortable discussions with colleagues/friends which have
resulted in me looking at things in a different way. And this list
has contributors with backgrounds broader than design, bringing other
experiences and viewpoints to the table. Some of the discussions
don't engage me, yet I am enjoying the differences of opinion and the
ways people argue their points.
The result for me isn't bad or good, but a learning experience.
