The Commonwealth of Design Research vs. J.S. Bach and Glen Gould, part
two.
- Mr Brandenburg Concert n. 5, The main expression of you (what you
called your completeness) is therefore a Mr. Bach cunning design in which
so called voices have a dialogue and therefore the piano soliloquy appears
to be a deliberate statement.
- It was not a piano...
- What?
- It was a harpsichord...
- Yes, a keyboard device with strings.
- Objection! Irrelevant.
- Sustained. Please Mr X could you stick to the facts?
- Thank you, Your Honour; I'll get briefly to my point. Mr 5, is it
or is it not, the piano solo a statement about design cognition?
- If I answer yes I will be stating that the usual references about
design cognition are wrong. I will, therefore, be stating that there is no
interest on defining design cognition from the point of view of the
cognition powers of designers designing. In fact, that definition is
nothing more than describing a part of human nature and thus very broad an
inoperative.
- What do you mean?
- I mean that considering design cognition a specific quality of
some humans (individually or in groups) that are engaged in designing will
just state that, under determined circumstances, humans will perform in a
social-culturally mediated cognitive phenomena which is basically true for
all cognitive phenomena.
- But, isn't that useful to define a domain-independent/universal
theory of design cognition?
- Only if design cognition would refer to the interpretations
leading to understandings made upon designed objects or systems of objects
thus defining a recursive way of "cognizing" design that we seldom
designate as "recognizing".
- Are you assuming that your long piano (or whatever) solo was
deliberately designed for design recognition in the sense that all
recognitions are cognitions?
- Objection! He's torturing the witness.
- Overruled. You may proceed.
- Are you implying that design cognition, in the sense that is
commonly used by a field of cognitive sciences, is wrong?
- Yes...
- And how your assumption relates to your long piano (or whatever)
solo?
- I think that Mr. Bach and Mr. Gould would give better account of
that than I do.
- I'm asking for your opinion.
- I admit that my long piano solo seems to be designed to design
recognition rather than to aesthetical perception.
- And therefore...
- It will be meaning that an individual-cultivated cognition that
can be found in various degrees in social groups can only be described as
recognition.
- Mr 5, are you being platonic?
- Objection! He's torturing the witness again.
- Overruled. You may proceed.
- Mr 5, isn't that a useless platonic statement?
- No. I'm just stating that, if we introduce in cognition sciences a
limit for social groups, we will be talking of recognition and not about
cognition as a universal human power. Design cognition is part of human
thinking since foresight and planning is human inherent. Social
institution of Design is a different thing.
- Would you, therefore, assume that a theory of 'design cognition'
is a theory of thinking style/habit/propensity?
- Yes, if we call it "design recognition".
