Dear Paul
It is also my understanding that Electronic signatures are now considered
legal and that you are correct in stating that it is authentication which is the
problem. As far as I am aware no one has yet come up with a system
which allows authentication of electronic signatures. So, we need to set a
challenge to any one who is interested to some up with a solution! Or if any
one already has, to let us all know!
I agree that it is distance learners who are most in need of a solution. Here
at the John Rylands University Library of Manchester we still ask them to
print and send their forms to us with a signed copyright declaration. Not
surprisingly, this causes them much frustration!

I would welcome any thoughts on this too due to the same frustrations as
Paul!

Subject: Copyright Declarations
Hello all
I know that this is a question which arises every few months in the
world of document delivery, but I thought I might voice it again to find
out if there was any change in the current situation.
Has anyone managed to find a way around the issue of users ordering
photocopies of articles remotely by signing the copyright declaration
electronically. The last I heard was that electronic signatures were
legal (I could be wrong), but that they had to be more secure than a
user simply logging in with a borrower number and PIN. I just wondered
if anyone has had any more experiences on this subject that they could
share or has found a way to resolve it?
It seems that the majority of institutions ask their readers to print
off a copyright form, sign it and return it to the library, as we do at
UCW, but I'm forever hoping for a legal way around this as our distance
learners are constantly disadvantaged.
Regards
Paul Williams
