_Jude_ is quite brutalistic, all the way down to the colour palette of
greys. The parents react to the deaths of their children by believing that
God was punishing them for their sins - specifically for being in a
relationship out of wedlock. More correctly, the woman believes this, and
the man tries to convince her to stay in the relationship with him.
But you know this, if you've read Hardy's novel...I haven't had the pleasure
(??) myself.

_Jude_ (dir. Michael Winterbottom) is a 1996 adapatation of a Thomas Hardy
novel that deals with this subject in a depressing manner. The loss of a
couple's children in a particularly horrible way puts an end to their
relationship.
Jude the Obscure?????
If it is anything like the book, it should be depressing....
not a feel good book by Hardy.
