THE 2005 ST ANDREWS PRIZE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
For the past seven years the St Andrews Prize for the Environment has
been attracting entries from around the world. The prize is an
international initiative of the University of St Andrews and the energy
company ConocoPhillips, and is dedicated to supporting and recognising
significant contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable
development. It is a forum for practical environmental ideas that
combine good science, economic realism and political acceptability. The
2004 Prize was awarded to Conrad Feather for the work he is doing with
the Nahua people in Peru to assist them with mapping their lands in the
upper reaches of the Amazon.
Applications are now invited from individuals, multi-disciplinary teams
or community groups for the 2005 St Andrews Prize for the Environment.
Applicants are free to choose whatever environmental challenge they
wish. Some examples of the type of topics the prize considers are: food
supply; community regeneration; communication and education; waste and
recycling; environmental justice; energy; agriculture and by-products
from waste, health and water issues.
Submissions are requested in two stages, the first - a single page
summary of your practical environmental solution - is due by 31 October
2004. Second stage submissions are upon invitation only and are due in
January 2005. The prize is decided at a prestigious seminar at the
University of St Andrews in May 2005. Exact dates will be posted on the
Prize website in July. The Prize consists of an award of $30,000USD and
a medal. Awards of $5,000USD are given to the runners-up.
