Hi All
For what it's worth.......
We had a similar scenario at one of our primary schools.... A parent
suggesting that they should be allowed entry into the car park because
of the DDA.....
A) the mother (who had a heart condition) was unable to walk the 100m to
the school entrance door.
B) other parents with very young children are allowed to escort their
kids into the classroom if they want to.
C) the mother in question thought the schools offer to have a teacher
escort the child into school was unreasonable because other parents
could do so if they wished. (equal rights)
D) the mother in question was ignoring the schools plea's not to enter
the playground with her car and did so regularly even though there was
insufficient space to turn and exit safely because other parents and
children were entering the school. A very dangerous practice since it is
necessary to execute a 3 point turn to exit the car park.
E) I suggested that the school consider allowing the parent into the
school car park 10 minutes before everyone else arrived so that she
could escort her child into school and then either collecting the child
at close of school from the car park after everyone else had left or
have the child escorted to the waiting car in the roadway with the other
children.
The school agreed to this but the parent refused. We had to bar the
parent from the car park on safety grounds.
Anybody any thoughts on this?
Alan

Re car sharing
I recently enquired to my daughter's school if they had a 'car sharing
list' apparently this is more complicated than it sounds. The main
problem being that the school cannot give out names of people willing to
car share unless they have vetted all of the prospective drivers.

Hi John & Elizabeth
I did not mean to say there should be no provision as people will try to
keep their children dependent instead of encouraging independence. On
the children's side I'll stick to the health promotion and 'special
needs' aspects. As you note parents delivering and collecting children
at schools are a problem for people with low vision and mobility. They
are also a safety hazard for other motorists and those getting into and
out of the cars. Limited provision by early arrival could be made for
those children who need the travel, If there is limited space better
solution would be to provide a drop bay and tell some of the teachers to
walk as an example to their pupils. Teaching is not just telling, it
should involve leadership and that requires a positive example not just
a statement of position while doing the opposite.
