Apologies for x-posting and those of you not in UK.

Dear Sir, Madam or Ms,
We are writing to you, as a published point of contact, to invite you
to participate in a consultation exercise which we have been commissioned to
undertake by the Economic and Social Research Council.
As you may know, the ESRC is establishing a National Centre for Research
Methods (NCRM) which has the aim of promoting the quality and range of
methodological skills and techniques used by the UK social science
community. The Centre will consist of a co-ordinating 'hub' and a series of
sub-centres distributed across a number of sites, thus drawing upon the
knowledge and expertise of researchers across the country.
The ESRC has decided to award the co-ordinating role of the NCRM to a team
from the University of Southampton, of which we represent the principal
applicants. The hub's first priority is to consult the UK social science
community over the shape of the Centre's research and training programme.
This exercise will inform the strategic direction of the Centre and the
commissioning of the sub-centres.
We should particularly welcome your views on:
- the needs for training in research methods beyond existing undergraduate
and postgraduate training provision, for example the delivery of short
courses and web-based resources;
- the needs for research in research methods.
Some further information about this consultation is given on the web-site
http://www.s3ri.soton.ac.uk/ncrm/ which includes a web-based questionnaire
for completion by individual researchers.
The deadline for receipt of responses is 19 January 2004. We apologise for
the tight deadline for this consultation, which is outside of our control
and results from the ESRC's commissioning timetable, but nonetheless hope
that your society will be able to find the time to share some views with us.
Yours sincerely,
Chris Skinner, Sue Heath, Grainne Conole and David Martin
