Okay, this time I did a Google search first. I'm not much wiser-- but she
seems to have been the daughter (or not) of St Donevaldus (or not) and she
and her eight sisters settled first near Glamis but after their father died
they were given land at Abernethy. Or possibly they came with St Bride when
Bride came to teach her cousin, the Pictish king Garald, about Christianity.
Her name is also rendered Mayota, which makes better sense as an early
Celtic name, and is locally abbreviated to Maik. And the graves of the Nine
Maidens were a place of pilgrimage for local girls till the Kirk Session put
a stop to it in the C17 (as late as that?!)
I love these intersections of the historic or near historic with the
pre-Christian. But can anyone add anything to St Mazota?
