medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. December) is the feast day of:
Nemesius of Alexandria (d. 250) Nemesius was a victim of the Decian
persecution, burned at the stake between two thieves at Alexandria.
Anastasius I (d. 401) Anastasius was pope 399-401. No less than Jerome,
Augustine, and Paulinus of Nola all praised A. for his poverty and pastoral
care. He also held a synod against Origenism. A. is also perhaps the only
pope to be succeeded by his biological son (Innocent I).
Macarius the Scot (d. 1153) Macarius was from either Scotland or Ireland.
He moved to Germany, where he became the first abbot of the "Scottish"
monastery of St. James, Wurzburg.
Urban V (blessed) (d. 1370) William of Grimoard was a native of Languedoc,
who after a good education became a Benedictine at Chirac. He served as
abbot first of St. Germanus, Auxerre and then St. Victor, Marseilles. In
1361 he was sent as a papal legate to Italy and the next year was elected
pope (although he wasn't a cardinal). He tried to move the papacy from
Avignon back to Rome, but was forced to return to Avignon just before he
died.
